Thanks again to those of you that have attended FRETS this year for our concerts by Altered Images; The Bluebells; JJ Gilmour; Norman Blake, Bernard Butler & James Grant; King Creosote; Roddy Woomble. Photos and videos of these concerts (taken by Les Hoggan) have been posted to this website.
We are very excited about our next FRETS concert in the Strathaven Hotel on Friday 17th June. The Bathers, Cowboy Mouth and Sugartown will all be performing songs from the albums they released on mercurial Hamburg-based independent label, Marina Records. All 3 groups have not performed together since From Marina With Love, a series of concerts that took place in the mid 1990s in the Tramway theatre, Glasgow. This is going to be a unique event, there are only a few tickets left – here is the WeGotTickets link https://www.wegottickets.com/event/541514
THE BATHERS emerged from the demise of Friends Again, and is very much a vehicle for songwriter and vocalist Chris Thomson. After releases with Go Discs and Island, Chris really found his feet when he signed to Marina Records, releasing the much lauded ‘Marina Trilogy’ of albums.
COWBOY MOUTH was a vehicle for former Jazzateers and Hipsway vocalist Grahame Skinner, releasing two albums on Marina (Life As A Dog & Love Is Dead) before winding down. The downbeat nature of Skin’s material was sypathetically played and produced, with the album packaging by Stefan Kassel hitting the right notes.
SUGARTOWN featured the infusion of Gwen Stewart’s country-soul influenced vocals over the two albums she released fronting the group (Swimming In The Horsepool & Slow Flows The River). The melancholy nature of these albums echoes themes contained in Sinatra’s Watertown album, with covers by Willie Nelson and The Velvet Underground signposting the atmosphere. Last Night From Glasgow are releasing Sugartown tracks on a compilation LP, Mount Florida.
