Action Time Vision will discuss the chronological development of a Do-It-Yourself aesthetic in the Scottish environment from the punk period circa 1977 through the explosion of independent record labels from Fast Product onwards to the present.

Grant McPhee: Caledonia Screaming covers the effect punk had in Scotland circa 1976/77, with groups in towns throughout the country forming punk groups and self-releasing 7” singles. Grant is a documentary film-maker and directed two acclaimed films that covered the post punk period set in motion by The Mekons’ Never Been In A Riot single on the Fast Product label. The films – Big Gold Dream followed by Teenage Superstars – covered the labels and artists associated with the post punk movement through to the C86 scene (written about in his previous book, Postcards From Scotland).

Katy Lironi: Katy was vocalist in Edinburgh C86 group The Fizzbombs, part of a scene that included Shop Assistants, Jesse Garon & the Desperadoes, and Rote Kapelle. She documents her period in The Fizzbombs in her memoir (Matilda in the Middle) and was interviewed by Saskia Holling for her excellent and comprehensive book (You And Me Against The World) covering the Edinburgh C86 era groups. Katy has been involved with the Glasgow independent DIY label Creeping Bent label from its inception in 1994, making fanzines and releasing records on the label as vocalist with The Secret Goldfish.

Douglas MacIntyre: Douglas made his first record as an 18 year old guitarist in Article 58 (released on Josef K manager Allan Campbell’s label, Rational Records), prior to Article 58 splitting up after a short tour with Josef K. MacIntyre set up his label (The Creeping Bent Organisation) in 1994 which took inspiration from the work done by Bob Last and Hilary Morrison with their Fast Product label. Douglas co-authored a book (Hungry Beat) based on Grant McPhee’s Big Gold Dream film about the youth explosion of independent music initiated by Fast Product. Creeping Bent: A Leap Into The Void is MacIntyre’s written account of running Creeping Bent, working with an array of artists (including Alan Vega, Davy Henderson, Katy Lironi, Gareth Sager, Sushil K. Dade, Vic Godard), and releasing his own music as Port Sulphur. Creeping Bent will cease operations in December 2025 after 30 years active service.

Nicola Meighan: is a broadcaster with the BBC and her own podcast covering Scottish Arts and Culture.

  1. I’ve got my tickets for friends again and cannot wait.

I was travelling down from Pitlochry a couple of years ago and Nicola was on the radio. She played Ronan Keating and introduced him as if he was a great artist. Genuinely couldn’t understand, so much brilliant music, especially Scottish music, and she chose to play that awfulness. Had to delete her and won’t go to see anything else she’s involved in. I’m that particular 😳
